Format-Compression testing July 08
Here are some random notes I have compiled about RED footage in Final Cut Pro:
I tested a _m proxy file at 72% zoom and -12.5 in the motion tab versus
a 1920*1080 clip from RA at 37.54 and -12.5 (NONE Compressor)
and a 720*320 clip from RA at 100 and 0 (NONE Compressor)
Although they were all different they all had different strengths and weaknesses and none of the settings was 100% better than the others.
All were in a NONE compressor timeline which is way better than an Uncompressed 10 bit 4:22 timeline in FCP. By better I mean tat it previews much better, but this has more to do with FCP then the final output quality.
When exported the 3 compressors -
NONE
Uncom 10bit 422
DV25
All look identical. In AE they 2 good ones look identical (gamma aside) but the DV looks garbage like it's half resolution.
When downconverting in RedCine to DV from DV the aspect ratio is wrong, but that can be fixed with some math and changes depending on whether you are doing DV 4:3 or anamorphic.
When going from 4k to DV it looks great.
If you put a 2k proxy into a DV timeline the sampling is basically as good as an _M version. The 2k is actually a little more aliasy. The Linear and Normal quality settings are actually almost the same. The linear is sharper but more aliasy.
